Kolkata is known as “THE CITY OF JOY”. Kolkata was founded on the 24th of August in 1686 by one of the employees and administrators of the British “EAST INDIA COMPANY” named Mr.job Charnock. He founded Calcutta to expand the British rule in India. Initially Kolkata was the capital of India. But later on Mr. George V, the then ruling emperor of India along with Queen Mary announced that the capital of India would be shifted from “KOLKATA” to “DELHI”. On the 1st of January in 2001 the name Calcutta was changed into Kolkata by the then government of West Bengal. The then government of West Bengal declared the name” Kolkata” would be used for official communication. Mr. Wauchope was the first commissioner of Kolkata police during the British rule. Mr. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was the first Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was elected on the 15th of August. Mr. Desh bandhu Chittaranjan Das was the first Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation with Subhash Chandra Bose as his Chief Executive Officer.
